This question was merged with be question “What are some poster printing techniques?” Which is not the same question as techniques for single poster prints, but I will answer both. Digital press: this is a state of the art technology involving the typical 4 color process(Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black or CMYK) + spot color system. These machines, being press machines are designed for large runs of posters. They are loaded with a forklift and hundreds of copies print per minute. a digital press I am familiar with is the HP Indigo digital press costing approximately 1.3 million USD. They work by using a single pass printhead for each channel delivering all the color at once to a fabric transfer belt. This belt presses against the paper and transfers the ink to be print. The closest thing to this that a consumer may be familiar with is a desk top laser printer, but massive and instead of heat, the image is applied with lquid ink and pressure. The advantage of this is that, although you’re pumping out thousands upon thousands of prints, if a change needs to be made to the artwork, it can be done instantaneously because the machine is digital. Think of things like mailers from big companies that have tons of coupons in them. They need to print these by the thousands, but every month the coupons have new deals and new expiration dates. A digital press means they can make these changes very easily.
